The Efficacy of Regenerative Therapy with Autologous Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cells for Low Back Pain Secondary to Degenerative Disc Disease

Contact Southwest Spine and Sports if you have a patient who could be a candidate for our study of regenerative therapy for lumbar disc disease


  • Age 21-65
  • LBP > Leg pain
  • 3 + months conservative care
  • Positive discogram (concordant pain) < 6 months old
  • 1 or 2 level symptomatic discs as shown by discogram
  • MRI < 6 months old, documenting disc desiccation, mild (< 50%) loss of disc height, bulge or small contained protrusion (< 5 mm)


  • No disc extrusion
  • No previous lumbar spinal surgery
  • No Prior IDET < 6 months
  • Not pregnant
  • No workman’s compensation for lumbar condition
  • No significant psychological issues
  • Not clinically obese (BMI must be < 30)
  • No personal history of cancer
  • No non-corrected endocrine disorder
  • No blood disorder
  • No neurologic disorder
  • No inflammatory or connective tissue disease
  • No peripheral vascular disease
  • No severe cardiac disease or pulmonary disease requiring medication usage
  • No history of reaction to transfusion of blood products
  • No neurologic compromise
  • During the 6 month treatment duration the participant must be able to avoid:
    • activities or work requiring running, jumping, climbing, repetitive full body impact
  • Participants must not be taking medications that include:
    • Anticoagulants for a 2 week period of time before and after the procedure
    • Anti-inflammatories
    • Immunosuppressives
    • Corticosteroid injections into the spine once enrolled into the study
