Efficacy of Transforaminal Steroid Injections
A study just published by the internationally famous physician, Nikolai Bogduk, M.D., in Pain Medicine reveals good evidence of the efficacy of transforaminal epidural injections for people with sciatica due to a herniated lumbar disc. When compared to other “sham” injections in or near the spine, a transforaminal epidural steroid injection gave patients 2-3 times more pain relief than other injections. Fortunately, no patient in the study needed more than two injections and a number of these patients in the study had relief up to one year. These results cannot be explained by a placebo effect alone.
