General Testimonials for Southwest Spine and Sports

2/22/2010

To whom it may concern:

I just want to say Thank you so much to the staff at Southwest Spine & Sports. I have had back problems for years and just lived with it until I could no longer do it.  Dr. Sherman and his staff are wonderful. The are always so pleasant and willing to help.  After Dr. Sherman completed the procedure on my lower back just as he explained in detail to me, and now it is like a new beginning.  Everyone bent over backwards to work with my Insurance Co and my work so I could have the best chance for a full recovery. I highly recommend Dr. Sherman and his team for any problems you might have.

Thanks again to everyone,
Nanette

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You may not remember me, but I came to you hardly able to walk, as for over a year my doctor had said I had a bad back- even though my back didn’t hurt. I came to you, x-ray was taken, and you did an intraarticular injection. I was in great pain! You suggested my problem was my right hip. You were correct. Twelve weeks ago today, Dr. Longo did a complete hip replacement. I needed no pain meds after the surgery, or since. I am now able to do anything I want except aerobics. I used a walker for 1 week, a cane for 1 week, and that was it. If it were not for you, who knows what may have happened. Thank you!!

In 2005 was the first sign of extreme low back pain. After years of trying to self heal September 2007 I finally went to see Dr. Komar.

Dr. Komar ordered an MRI and follow-up office visit along with some pain medication to help a long the way. After physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication I was 85% pain free.

May 2008 my back returned I decided to try chiropractic with no relief I went to natural pathetic/chiropractic as things began to get worse I went to see a world renown spinal surgeon along with two more spinal surgeons that all recommended the same treatment of open back surgery with fusion and no guarantees of any kind. In early February 2009 I decided to go back to the Doctor who provided me with the most relief Dr. Komar.

This was the smartest decision I had made Dr. Komar welcomed me with kindness, positive encourgement and great concern about my back. He followed all protocols of epidural steroid injections, followed by a discography test.

With the results of the discography test he recommended a procedure (IDET) Intradiscal Electrothermal Annuoplasty. I decided to trust Dr. Komar and his expertise and I could not be any happier although my insurance did not cover the full procedure cost it was well worth the cost I came out of pocket. It has been 6months since the IDET procedure I have had amazing results. Before I could only sit, stand, walk for 10-15mintues now an hour is not a problem. I had nerve compression 24hours a day and it now completely gone. I had severe pain to the point I just wanted to stay home. Now 6 months later I am careful about my activities but I now able to workout doing treadmill incline walking for 50 minutes and I just start the Stairmaster machine and can do this for 20 minutes which the beginning of year I had a difficult time getting out of bed. I do have pain but not enough to keep me home and through medications and careful movements I can keep my pain under control.

My family and I could never thank Dr. Komar enough he has helped me get my life back. I know now if I get any flare up at all the first call I make is to Southwest Spine.

My experience with Doctor Sherman and the staff at Spine and Sports in the Tempe location was truly wonderful! I have been having back pain for a few years, now and finally decided to go see some one to try and help me figure out the problem. Dr. Sherman was so helpful from the start, he listened to me and was very caring about my situation. He took action right from the start and wanted to help me with rehabilitation and trying to keep me from having to have back surgery of any kind. I went in for a spinal injection about a month ago to see if this would help with the pain and it has been a big help! I truly recommend this procedure for any one that needs some relief of back pain! My night pain was so bad and this has changed a great deal sense this procedure was done like day and night! Dr, Sherman did a great job, and he made sure I followed up after the injection was done. I will continue to visit the office when needed and again I can’t say enough about my experience with this Doctor! I believe if I had not found Dr. Sherman, that I still would not know what was wrong he did all the right steps in finding out the problem. My Diagnosis is I have a Bulging disc and im happy to know the problem finally!! He is helping with this problem I have, and I am so Thankful for his effort! I recommend Dr. Sherman to any one in need of back pain and the Southwest Spine and Sports center.

Sincerely,
Karla L.

Dr Komar was great, as was the physician assistant. They asked me a lot of very good questions and made observations no one has ever made in the past. It’s the first time I’ve felt someone (besides my family doctor) really cared about me as a person and how difficult a road this has been for me since this all started back in 1973.

Sincerely,

8/30/2009

A few weeks ago I was able to do something that I hadn't been able to do for at least two years......work in my yard and trim the bushes.  Wow, this was wonderful and all because of coming to Southwest Spine and Sports.

I had gotten to the point that I couldn't ride in a car my than an hour and that was really pushing it.  Sitting was a real problem and if I went out to dinner with friends, I would have to excuse myself several times just to walk around.  I have three compressed discs in my lower spine and three in my neck that are compressed.

I had the medial branch block done on the right side of my neck and then after that the radiofrequency ablation.  That was a success and I then moved forward and had the same procedures done on the left side of my neck.  Now, I can do craft projects and read for more than the fifteen minutes that was my max time before the procedures.

Then Dr. Wolff started on the low back and did the medial branch block on the left side of my low spine.  After being sure that those were the right places, he did the radiofrequency ablation on the left side.

That weekend I did yardwork and didn't have all the pain that I used to have.  I literally have not been able to do this type of thing for over two years.  And with my crafts, I teach a class and after the class was over, I would have to go to bed for an hour or so just to relieve the pain.

Many thanks Dr. Wolff.  I'm glad to know that you are there should I need you for another procedure some place else.

8/28/2009

My name is David.  I am 72 and a retired attorney.  In my retirement I have entertained myself thoroughy by landscaping an acre property which involved endless grading through use of a pickax, the construction of an embankment involving the movement by shovel and wheel barrel  of 60 tons of fill, the covering of the entire lot by the spreading by shovel and wheel barrel of 400 tons of a crushed granite ground cover and the planting of countless trees, desert plants, etc.

My age caught up with me abruptly in February, 2009, when I awoke one day with such excruciating pain in my neck area, both shoulders and both legs that I could barely move my head, arms and legs.  Pain medication did nothing to abate my agony.  After consulting with a number of pysicians over a span of several months, none of whom were able to make a diagnosis, it was suggested that I see Michael W. Wolff, M.D. of Southwest Spine & Sports.

From the outset, I developed a feeling that my pain had met its match.  I received the most thorough examinations and testing I have ever encountered, administered by young physicians, who, fulfilling their fellowships under Dr. Wolff's tutelage and close scrutiny, collected sufficient information to permit Dr. Wolff to come to a diagnosis and plan of action.  In short order, with innovative non surgical procedures administered by Dr. Wolff, my pain did not just lessen;  it totally subsided.  Other patients who I met in the waiting area voiced similar accolades regarding Dr. Wolff and his colleagues.

I would be remiss if I didn't comment on Dr. Wolff's support staff.  From the time that you enter the office you are greeted by and administerd to by highly trained individuals whose demeaners make you feel welcome and whose talents process you  in a most efficient manner.

I hope this letter finds you well. I was one of your patients from the fall/winter 2006 through spring of 2007, and I am writing to give you an update on how things are going. As quick refresher, you saw me for tendonitis in both my arms caused by too much keyboard and mouse usage while I was working for the U.S. Navy in San Diego. I also saw you for issues with my lower back and legs. I want to reiterate how much I appreciated your attentive and compassionate care.

Sincerely,
Ed C.

4/10/2009

Following my recent visit to your office and my subsequent procedure, I wanted to pass along my thanks to all at Southwest Spine and Sports. From a medical standpoint, it appears to have been an unqualified success, as I am back working out and playing golf, pain-free. Perhaps more importantly, from a personal experience it was an unqualified success as well. In our own business we try very hard to about give our clients not only the benefit of our professional expertise and results, but to provide them with a pleasant, caring, easy, comfortable and convenient experience. So, I am probably oversensitive to that in others. Frankly, it is rare to find a health care provider who shares those same values. However, you clearly “get it” and I commend you and thank you all for that. Gretchen elicited not only great confidence in her knowledge and ability but great comfort by treating me warmly, like a unique individual with unique circumstances and unique lifestyle goals (all this despite the fact she has probably seen hundreds of patients with my same nagging old-guy back problem). I had a similar experience with all of the people I met and dealt with there. Although I didn’t have the opportunity of meeting Dr. Wolff, I can only assume that this culture starts there. Although I would like to think I would not need your services again, chances are that I will, and I will not hesitate to do so; nor to recommend you to any of my sporting / aging friends.

Thank you.
David W.

Just wanted to drop you a note regarding the examination I had with Dr. Sherman and procedure with Dr. Wolff on my sore leg caused by a bulging disc in my back. The epidural I received was painless and worked immediately on the pain that I had in my leg for months. Physical therapy helped, but in the end, the epidural was what I needed. Thank you for the relief.

I also just completed an examination on my shoulder by Dr Wolf. Had an ultrasound pinpointing exactly what needed to be done, and finally an injection by Dr. Sherman (a so called rookie) which was painless and I had immediate results in a reduction in pain. Thank you.

At first I didn’t realize that SW Spine and Sports helped with all pain management, I thought it was only spine. Nice to know that you can assist in a non-surgical approach to the management of pain.

This is not an idle expression of my thanks. It is as heartfelt as I know how to convey it. Today, just 24 hours after her procedure with you, Vinceanne left the house to attend a fashion show at the Four Seasons. She looked like a spirited, glowing princess. She felt like the healthy person I long for her to be. We have put in place your instructions. I realize we have a challenge that will continue to test us. But you have given us a fresh start. And I’m more grateful than you can imagine.

Thanks to you both. I have walked around a pyramid, climbed to see the Sphinx, went in a hot air balloon, which was some feat (you have to climb a ladder to get in and out), went to the Valley of the Kings, and walked almost 3 hours in and through the Temple of Karnak, and up hills to Abu Simbel. Everything else is frosting on the cake. Thanks again.

I was so excited to hear that Dr Wolff was going to have a website and that I could let everyone know about my experiences with Dr Wolff and those wonderful people he works with. Four years ago, when I started the process with doctors trying to get rid of my pain, I was sent to Dr. Wolff by my primary care physician. He helped me initially with injections and many other treatments while working towards finding a way to end my pain. He got me set up with a surgeon who, in hopes of solving my problem, removed my coccyx and part of my sacrum. The surgeon warned that in his experiences, the procedure would not end my pain. Unfortunately, he was right. When the surgery failed and I finally understood that I would not have a miracle cure, Dr Wolff took the time to listen to my worries and worked WITH me (instead of telling me how I felt – like so many other doctors had). He helped me get my life back by finding the right treatment plan and now I look forward to each and every day with my family. Gretchen, Dr. Wolff’s PA, is fantastic and the office staff really takes the time to get to know you and make you feel comfortable.

Thank you, Dr. Wolff.

Sincerely,
Jennifer K.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the treatment we received from Dr. Wolff and his staff.  Everyone—-the doctors, physician assistants, nurses and office staff—-treated us with the utmost kindness, compassion and respect.

The staff accommodated us with emergency appointments, and were always considerate of the fact that our visits require a 180-mile round trip drive from Payson.    Dr. Wolff did an amazing job at diagnosing and treating my husband’s pain (after a car accident); when he wasn’t available, his assistants offered the same professionalism and expertise.    My husband is now pain-free—-and with minimally invasive treatment.

Dr. Wolff’s knowledge and his philosophy of finding the best possible, least invasive treatment was a great relief to us, both literally and all other ways.  He is excellent at what he does. Our thanks also goes to the book-keeping staff who patiently helped us with insurance and Medicare.   They handled our case with consideration and understanding, while waiting for a long-delayed settlement.

We highly recommend Southwest Spine and Sports for its excellent medical and technical skills and for its outstanding customer service.

I have had pain throughout my body since I was a teenager due to scoliosis and arthritis. In May of ’06 I had extreme back surgery, but still had significant pain. I was referred to Dr. Michael Wolff in May ’07. Because of his superlative care, his knowledge and willingness to try numerous medications and therapies, I am now getting my life back. He is devoted to his patients and relentless in making a difference in their health.

Just a few thoughts I wanted to express to you that I had after my office visit with you. As I told you, the decision about what to do for my left hip pain has been a difficult one for me. It seems that such a personal decision has been a hard one to make notwithstanding my educational level and my 24 years on the Industrial Commission bench. Maybe the forgoing makes it more difficult, I don’t know. Nevertheless, I want to tell you that it was great help, and reassuring, to me to know that you think I am making the right decision. Thank you for sharing your views with me.

I look forward to seeing you down the road, either on an industrial claim, or for other old age aches and pains that I may have.

Thank you again for you help and advice.
Very truly yours,
James O.

I would just like to tell you how much I appreciate your patience and professional behavior. It has taken a long time to really find out what was wrong. It has taken its toll on me, but hopefully now we have a path on how to correct it. Please don’t mistake my anger; it is only frustration. I have been more than happy with your treatment. I have been told since I got here that Arizona doesn’t have a very good medical field. I don’t think you have treated them. Your knowledge of my problem has been a great benefit to my understanding of this problem. I don’t think people realize how much of your off duty time goes into researching your field. I might only be one person, but from the bottom of my heart, thanks.

Sincerely,
Dean S.

I would like to say thank you for your time, knowledge, and experience with back problems of mine. My attorney told me how good it was for what you had to say in the hearing of the case about my back & the company that I used to work for. If and when I have any problems with my back, the company that I used to work for has to pay for all of my medical bills, because I got the judgment & award ruling in my favor.

“Thank you very much.” I really appreciate your help.

Pain is a symptom that creates confusion, nasty disposition, and reactions difficult to describe. That was how I was far too long a period. When Dr. Wolff first treated me for this condition, I was apprehensive. I had been to the Mayo Clinic and was told to take 2 Advil. I was given a shot of cortisone and sent home. The pain persisted. After one epidural with Dr. Wolff, 90% of my pain was gone. I cannot praise Dr. Wolff and his expertise enough for the relief I now have. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Ralph B.

PRP Injections

5/7/2009

I have had hip problems for the past 2 years. Every treatment during that time period helped for a little while but was not lasting. On February 1, 2009, Dr. Wolff gave me an injection utilizing my platelets and plasma. The results have been fantastic (90% better).

Sincerely,

4/29/2009

This is a quick update on the PRP injection I had in my right elbow at your office early April:

Injection: Very little pain during the injection.

Post Injection: Max pain reached about 30 minutes after injection… very intense. Subsided fairly quickly thereafter. Manageable without medication within 24 hours.

Injection Site: Noticeable swelling and discoloration at injection site. Limitation on range of motion for several weeks. Injection site very tender for 3-4 weeks. In hindsight, I believe I could have mitigated some of the injection site trauma with ice pack treatments the first 48 hours.

Tendonitis: Significant improvement in the condition of the elbow after 4 weeks. I did not do anything with the arm during that period, so we can't eliminate the "rest" variable from the equation, but the results are still impressive. I played golf at 4 weeks… no pain at all. I estimate 50% recovery at this point. I intend to take it easy on the arm for another 2-3 weeks, and then re-evaluate.

My belief is that a 2nd injection in another 4-5 months might fix the problem.

Thanks again for your help, and give me a call with any questions.
Perry

Ultrasound/Fluoroscopy

I have always thought of myself as an active, healthy person, with the ability to take on any problem, head on, even under the most difficult of circumstances, and produce a rapid resolution. That was until March 16, 2007, when without warning; my life took on a very drastic and immediate change.

Early that morning, I experienced pain and spasms that ran relentlessly from my left hip to the tip of my toes that was so overwhelming, any movement resulted in even more of the same excruciating pain. With that, I continued to suffer for three weeks, was moved from hospital to rehab centers, from numerous doctors and many MRI’s and there seemed to be no relief in sight.

For those who were willing to help, they knew little of what to do. That was until my wife got me an appointment with Dr. Michael Wolff, who upon the first meeting confirmed that he could provide some resolution and relief to my dilemma by performing an epidural. Considering I had one previously in the hospital, I was very pessimistic of his confidence, although he stated that the procedure I had previously was done blindly and he would perform this one with fluoroscopy, thereby getting the medication precisely to where it was needed. Willing to do or try most anything without any real optimism, I underwent my first of two epidurals. After the first epidural, and to my utter amazement, I was 50% better the very same day. Since then, I have had another epidural and am about 90% better and am optimistic of a full recovery.

Dr. Michael Wolff is still watching over me closely and in addition to providing a medical solution, he also listens and cares. Which I can confirm is considerably more than I have encountered with anyone in the medical profession throughout this torturous ordeal. For that, and so much more, I will be forever grateful to him.

My sincere, thanks and deep appreciation,
Lonnie B.

Epidurals

10/28/2009

I want to express my sincerest gratitude to Dr. Sherman.

I had been experiencing sporadic back pain for many months, was on pain medications, and finally referred for physical therapy. I was seeing a well-known Physical Therapist who highly recommended Southwest Spine and Sports due to concerns of the nature of damage being other than muscular. Dr. Sherman ordered X-Rays immediately and then MRI's of my mid and lower back. Upon investigation, he determined that it was mainly muscular and trigger point injections would help relieve some of the muscular tension thus making P.T. more beneficial. The pain lifted within days. I was making great progress and about to be released from P.T. but awoke one morning in severe pain. Dr. Sherman ordered an MRI of my neck. He found some issues which upheld his conclusion of a pinched nerve at the C-6 and C-7 area. Dr. Sherman himself, to determine the exact point of concern, performed an EMG. I am now making expedient recovery from that minor setback due to epidural spinal injections around the inflamed areas, also performed by Dr. Sherman.

My goals were to find a way to relieve the pain so I could get off the pain medication and do so without surgery if possible. Dr. Sherman not only performed the procedures but he also explained every single step along the way in such a comforting manner that this was actually a pleasant experience for me. Due to Dr Sherman's expertise, his informative vocalizations, and his wonderful staff I am off pain medications and did not have to undergo any major surgery.

I like neither doctors nor taking medications and only go to the best. Dr. Sherman and his staff are highly professional and absolute gifts to the medical profession and definite assets to Southwest Spine and Sports. This meager testimony is a small fraction of the gratitude I feel. I attempted but feel no words can express my experience highly enough.

Rebecka L.

I injured my back in a fall and have spent the past three years trying to make it better. I tried physical therapy first with only minor relief and a so-so exercise program. Then I tried epidural shots and a new physical therapist (a really good PT can make a huge difference). The shots and PT helped a lot, but they were not a permanent solution to the swelling in the disk for me. I cannot take anti-inflammatories on a regular basis because they make me ill, so eventually the swelling would come back. Recently, when the pressure on the sciatic nerve returned, I had PDD (Percutaneous Disc Decompression) done to help clean out the bulge in the disk. It is done as an out-patient procedure and was very similar to the epidural shots. The doctor goes in at the same place in my back and cleans the disk instead of performing an injection. I left the surgery center an hour or so later with just two small Band-aids and a huge reduction in the pain. I had one more epidural shot about a month after the procedure to help alleviate the last of the pain and swelling, and I feel great. The new Back Jacket that you wear for a few weeks to help keep your spine straight and remind you to be nice to your back is very easy to use and comes with hot/cold gel pads to fit into it as needed. I am continuing with a great physical therapist to strengthen the muscles in my back and stomach, but I feel better than I have in three years and have returned to work in just 6 weeks.

I am writing this to thank you for giving me my life back! As you know, I was in the midst of true health, walking four miles a day, golfing three times a week, when by some "unknown" movement I ruptured a disc in my lower back. This disc put pressure on a nerve and I was pretty much immobilized. For three weeks I could barely walk to the bathroom, I sat on a stool in the shower because I couldn't stand for even five minutes at a time. I was on the heaviest pain medication that could be prescribed and took it as frequently as possible. I basically sat in a chair for these weeks.

Then I was referred to your office. You immediately got me into an outpatient center and injected my spine with an epidural. I want to tell you how much I appreciated the staff that worked with me, both in your offices and at the outpatient surgery center. Everything was explained to me and the staff made as comfortable as humanly possible.

After this first shot, I regained some of my mobility and I was able to get off the heavy duty pain meds. I still did not have stamina, and I still had pain and numbness. This necessitated a second shot and within about five days, I was virtually pain free, regained mobility, and the numbness in my leg and foot all but left.

Within a couple of weeks, I was back to walking four miles a day. I wanted to send to you this letter of appreciation for your expertise in restoring my health. I would gladly recommend your services to anyone experiencing pain and or debilitating injuries. Thank you so very much for your time and consideration!

Sincerely,
Michael B.

My sincere, thanks and deep appreciation,
Lonnie B.

A note of thanks! The 2 epidural injections you did for me worked beautifully! Thank you for your knowledge, skill, and great bedside manner. Your staff in the office and the staff at the Scottsdale Center were also excellent!

Thanks again-

This is a small note to let you know how much I appreciate your expertise. With your three epidurals, I have had a considerable reduction in arm/hand pain. That gives joy back to my life. How can I thank you? What a gift to have that deep pain usually gone. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you,

Denise S.

I wanted to thank you for all of your help with my back. Althought the disc didn’t recede, you got me through the first quarter of the med school that I probably couldn’t have done without the epidural. I appreciate you also taking the time to get me into Dr. Harrington’s and getting me in for a 2nd opinion. It’s tough being new to the valley without a primary care physician to help me, which you did.

Sincerely,
Jennifer J.

You’ll probably get a good laugh or two out of this letter, if anything, but I had to write to you!

After meeting you a couple of years ago, when you gave me the epidural injections in my neck from an auto accident I was in, during htat time I had built a ‘trust’ with you, that you would make sure I wouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure because you knew what a nervous wreck I was! Do you remember that? Good-grief! Anyway, you were right, I didn’t feel anything with my neck epidurals. Even though I was scared to death about having a needle anywhere near my spine. But you comforted me with your words and also knowing you’ve got ‘the best’ reputation in town, I felt that I was in good hands.

Recently, I came in to see you about my lower back. After explaining the horrifying details of my past experience with injections in my low back from another doctor who did the procedure, you told met hings were different now. I wanted to have that same trust in you I had with my neck injections, but my low back was a whole different ballgame! Beause of the physiological damage from the past, it just wouldn’t leave my mind, even down to the minute that I was rolled into the surgical room to have the procedure done back in 1988, I had absolutely zero trust in the doctor that did the fist round of injections in my low back. But unlike that feeling of the past, you reassured me with your words and you told me everything would be so much better this time. I set my appointment to have the injections done.

Let me tell you Dr. Wolff, that week I waited for my appointment, I was a complete mess! I was more nervous than ever! When the day finally arrived, I broke down in my husband’s arms in the waiting room, telling him I didn’t know if I could go through it all again. But he reminded me that I couldn’t be in better hands! He reminded me of my neck injections and the trust I told him I had for you.

Well, it came time for me to go back and get all set up. The nursing staff was incredible! I was beside myself of the wonderful care I received, especially from Barbara. When I broke down again as I waited for my procedure, she came over and tried to comfort me. I told her I felt like an idiot, being almost 40 years old and I’m balling my head off over this procedure! But the one thing that I remembered was when you came out before I went back for my injections, and told me you’d make sure I wouldn’t feel anything… and you were right once again!

For the very first time in seventeen years, I am actually ‘pain-free’ in my lower back! I can’t tell you just how thankful I am to be your patient!! Since my first round of epidurals in 1988 and not experiencing any relief what-so-ever from the injections I had, not to mention the horrible experience I went though, everything was completely different this time! Because I was in the skilled hands of you, Dr. Wolff! I’m pain-free!!! PAIN FREE!!!!! How awesome!!! I can actually sleep a full night now and I can lie on my left side again! I haven’t done that in 17 years!!

Thank you so much Dr Wolff for taking such good care of me and please thank your staff at North Scottsdale Ambulatory, the nurses were out of this world!!

Very truly,
Shelly M.

Pain is a symptom that creates confusion, nasty disposition, and reactions difficult to describe. That was how I was for too long a period.

When Dr. Wolff first treated me for this condition, I was apprehensive. I had been to the Mayo Clinic and was told to take 2 Advil. I was given a shot of cortisone and send home- the pain persisted.

After one epidural, 90% of my pain was gone. I can’t praise Dr. Wolff and his expertise enough for the relief I now have. Thank you, your mother & dad - they did good!

Sincerely,
Ralph B.

It has been 2+ weeks since you administered two injections - a hip and an epidural - to me. The result of these injections is that I have little to no pain in my right groin, the lower back pain, and accompanying sciatica is spasmodic, and the hip socket pain has been reduced by about 50%. The latter remains the primary source of my immobility and pain.

I imagine I am headed for surgical intervention in the future, but your treatment has been a great deal of help in the mean time. I realize that you fit me into your busy schedule at your inconvenience, and I appreciate your kindness.

Regards,
Judith A.

Radiofrequency Ablations

I have been in pain for many years with my lumbar spine and upon falling earlier in the year, the pain became worse.  Dr. Wolff suggested doing Radiofrequency Ablation on the L3, L4, and L5 disk area to control the pain.  It has been 3 weeks since the procedure was performed and the pain is gone from that area.  I wish I had come in years ago but I did not know anything could be done for the pain except diminishing it with Tylenol and stretching exercises.  I am now back to exercising at the gym and doing all of the things that aggravated my back and feel normal again.  Thank you Dr. Wolff for giving me my life back.

On April 4, 2008 you performed a Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedure on my right L3, L4, L5 medial branch nerves. I had been suffering from lower back pain for a number of years. I woke up the next morning, and for the first time in years, was pain free. It is now three weeks later and I am still pain free. I want to say thank you and would recommend this procedure for anyone suffering from the same problem. I would also like to acknowledge the staff in your office and at the surgery center. They are very professional and also make you feel comfortable while going through these procedures.

Thanks,
Jeffrey S.

IntraDiscal ElectroThermal Therapy (IDET)

If you have been told that the IntraDiscal ElectroThermal (IDET) procedure may help you, then you are one of the fortunate ones that Dr. Wolff believes will benefit from this procedure to restore your disc. My suggestion to you is that you say “Yes.” After first hearing of this procedure from Dr. Wolff, I went home and researched it over the Internet on several websites. From them I learned about the scientific rundown on what happens during and after the procedure, but there are no testimonials. I’ll admit that I was very nervous about going ahead with the IDET procedure even after going through a successful back fusion 18 years ago. It was just the fact that you must be awake to talk with Dr. Wolff while he works on the disc during this hour. When I got to the surgical center I received more information from the staff of nurses that work with Dr. Wolff which also helped to calm me down. That should make you feel more at ease, it did for me!

After prepping me for this procedure, which was inserting an IV into me and joking with the nurses, I waited by listening to my favorite music. Here I was going to have this disc repaired and it finally stopped hurting. So the joke was no sneaking out the back door. I walked into the room, got on the table and Dr. Wolff went to work. If you have had a back injection to relieve your pain then you have already experienced a big part of what he will be doing to you. The only difference is he must place a flexible catheter (wire) against the bulge in the disc wall to toughen it up and desensitize the area causing you all the pain. Once this was done I felt nothing! It was as if I was given a Novocain shot for dental work. Then the wire was placed in the center of my disc and heated to pull all the fluid back to the middle and shrink it down to normal size. After this was done, I got back into the lounge chair and was wheeled into the recovery area. I was told in about four hours my nerves would start to wake up; it took six for me. As they woke up there was no pain but my legs would twitch and jerk every now and then. This was definitely not what I was expecting to happen and I had a fantastic night of sleep. I was told that for the next two weeks I’d have to do a lot of laying around and could only get up to use the bathroom and feed myself. Saturday was my worst day of pain then the level continued to decrease until Thursday of the following week. At that time I put away all my pain medication. That is correct, no more pain! I started to go for short walks around the cul-de-sac, around the block and 12 days after the procedure I went for a two mile walk. Then seventeen days after the IDET procedure I went back to work on a part time basis. I wore my back brace once the IDET procedure was done for two months and gradually removed it from my daily attire. Today, two months after the IDET procedure, I am off all medications and no longer wearing a back brace!

I’ve been told that I am an exceptional case, but this could be you too. Say yes and you, too, could be fortunate enough to get rid of your back pain and enjoy life again!

Pauline

I want to say “thanks again” for the IDET surgery. When I had the visit with you in Tempe and chose to get the surgery, I remember you saying that it will most likely only take about 40-50% of the pain away. It was o.k. with me, because it would be better than I was doing at that time. Not long after the surgery, I felt better every day.

Things were going so well with my back about 3 or 4 months later when you told me that it looked like 80% of the pain would be gone if I took care of my back. It seems that the last month or so, if I really pay attention to how I move and my limits of movement, etc., I have -0-% pain. I’ve really learned a lot over the last year from you and the physical therapy.

If you ever have any patients that would have any questions about my “back problems” and my recovery after the IDET, I would love to share things with them. “Thank you very much.”

Nucleoplasty/Percutaneous Disc Decompression (PDD)

In November of 2007, I pinched a nerve in my lower back at L4/L5. The pain would radiate from my low back into my left calf. The pain was so severe, I could not stand for more than 5 minutes, which kept me from being able to work, as I am a butcher. After months of pain and several injections without relief from pain, I was referred to Dr. Michael Wolff. On my first visit with Dr. Wolff, I felt like I was not just another patient, but a friend that he wanted to help. Within one week, I was scheduled for a Percutaneous Disc Decompression. I had this done May 23, 2008 at an outpatient center performed by Dr. Wolff and his staff. Within one week of the procedure, I was able to go to the grocery store with my family, stand with my kids while they rode their bikes, and walk through the mall. On June 23, 2008, I returned to work part time after 7 months of being out. It is now July 14, 2008, and I am working full 8 hour days. I feel like my life is getting back to normal. I am no longer depressed, and I feel like myself again. I owe this to Dr. Wolff and his staff at Southwest Spine and Sports. Thank you!

Thanks for everything,
Conrado F.

Discogram

Dr. Wolff is truly an amazing doctor with such a kind and sweet spirit. He cares that his patient is in pain. I remember the day I met Dr. Wolff, I went home, told my husband and called my best friend and told them that I found Dr. Right. I found the doctor that was going to help me. This came after 5 long years, 7 doctors (over 2 states), countless injections, MRI’s, shots, and incorrect diagnoses. I was told that I just wanted drugs, needed rehab, depression was causing my pain- oh, and that I was fat. If I would lose weight, all my pain would go away- well if I wasn’t in so much pain, I would be working out in the first place. I started coming to Dr. Wolff’s Tempe office and it took some playing around and figuring out what worked and didn’t work. I had the discogram done- not on the top 10 things to repeat in life, but it provided the information we needed. I know that I did have spine problems and that it wasn’t in my head like the other doctors said; it was in my back.

I am very pleased to report that Dr. Wolff has been wonderful and I am under good care. I am now down to about 3-4 out of 10 on the pain scale, whereas before it was 8 out of 10. Big improvements. I can play with my kids, do things I haven’t in years, and I feel better than I have in years. Words can’t express my thankfulness to Dr. Wolff. I always have to give him a big hug- he is the most wonderful doctor and I am so thankful for him- daily. By the way, I am down 25 lbs. and going to the gym 5 days a week, thanks to Dr. Wolff and his supportive staff.

Viscosupplementation

Cortisone

01/21/2009

I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know how things turned out since I last saw you for my 2nd cortisone injection last July. If you recall, I was having some irritation/aggravation issues in my anterior tibialis muscles. I am happy to let you know that my training went very well for the following six months. My leg held up in the face of 85 mile weeks and I just finished the Rock and Roll Marathon this past Sunday here in Phoenix with an official time of 2:56:56 for 83rd place overall out of 6419 total finishers (and top 20 AZ finisher!). This is 6 minutes faster than my previous best. Thanks for all your help and should I need your help again in the future, I won’t hesitate to stop in!

Thanks again,
Jeff M.

Thank you so much for healing my hip and making it possible for me to move around again normally and comfortably.

In June of 2005, I could barely walk, because of the pain from arthritis in my left hip joint. Most of the time when I went to the grocery store, I had to use one of the electric carts to buy my groceries. You gave me two cortisone shots six weeks apart; after that, I felt great and could walk normally again, as if nothing had ever happened to me. I even entered the Ms. Senior Arizona pageant on March 6, 2006 at the Maricopa County Event Center, in Sun City, AZ and won. I had to model an evening gown, perform a talent, give my philosophy of life, and meet with the judges. I performed, (and still do) for many functions, my favorite being the singing of the National Anthem at a Diamondback home game. The whole experience enhanced my life, and I have to thank you especially, because without the treatments, I would never have been able to enter the pageant.

I will continue to recommend you to anyone who is in need of Sports and Spinal Medical Care.

Sincerely,
Peggy B.

Synvisc

In March 2005, before I knew of your practice, I had a total right knee replacement. Most people I know need to have the other knee done within a year of the first. Thankfully I found you and your center, and Synvisc shots. Three and a third years later, my other knee is pain free and no surgery is needed. This last set of shots have lasted almost a year so far. Amazing!! Thanks so much!
