I Have Sciatica! Help!

Sciatica is a common condition that affects as much as 10% of the population, usually those aged 25 to 45. Risk factors for sciatica include prolonged sitting or lying with pressure on the buttocks, and while it can be associated with a specific injury, it doesn’t have to be.

Signs and symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Pain in the rear or leg that may worsen when sitting
  • Burning or tingling down the leg
  • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg or foot
  • A constant pain on one side of the rear
  • A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up

Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body, with pain extending from the lower back all the way down the back of the thigh and the rest of the leg. Depending on the exact location of the sciatic nerve, pain may extend into the foot or toes. Sciatica symptoms range from mild to debilitating.

Sciatica Treatment Options

The severity of sciatica can vary from person to person, but it can be debilitating, making it difficult to perform basic life tasks like sitting, standing or walking. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options available to help you minimize or eliminate your pain and help you get back to living a healthy, productive life.

At Southwest Spine & Sports, our team of specialists is highly trained in nonsurgical treatment of joint pain, nerve pain and sports injuries. Our physicians will work with you to accurately diagnose the root cause of your sciatica by performing a thorough history and a physical examination including a complete assessment of your musculoskeletal and neurological symptoms. After diagnostic review, you’ll receive a customized nonsurgical treatment program with our caring physiatrists overseeing the healing process so you can reduce the pain and put your life back together.

Our expert physicians also specialize in the field of regenerative medicine, specifically PRP and stem cell therapy using autologous stem cells (bone marrow aspirate concentrate from a patient’s own hip bone).

PRP for Sciatica

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, effective and all natural way to heal damaged joints. PRP consists of a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and then injected into the injured area. Medical research and intensive studies are leading the way to the tremendous benefits offered by PRP for patients suffering from pain associated with sciatica, with the goal of enhancing the body’s ability to naturally heal itself.

Stem Cell Therapy for Sciatica

Stem cell therapy is another nonsurgical alternative to pain management that has been practiced since the early 1990s and uses the body’s own stem cells to treat all manner of degenerative conditions, including pain associated with sciatica. Adult stem cells, collected from reservoirs in bone marrow and adipose tissue, can be transferred directly into the site of the joint or disc injury safely and effectively in an outpatient facility, without resorting to surgery. Stem cell therapy has been proven to be extremely effective and is quickly increasing in popularity among patients of all ages.
